[Korean Wave] 14th Day Holidays in South Korea


Did you know that the 14th of every month is a holiday in South Korea? Given that a large number of Koreans love everything that is cute or romantic, each 14th day of all the 12 months are unofficially considered as holidays that are dedicated to celebrating and appreciating life's simple pleasures. They are mostly centered around couples and their sweet sentiments.

January 14th: Diary Day/ Candle Day

During this day, couples and friends exchange blank diaries as gifts. Everything good that will happen throughout the year (anniversaries, birthdays, and other special occasions) are recorded into the journals. This is also a day when you give and receive decorative candles.


February 14th: Valentines Day

Just like in most countries, South Korea celebrates Valentine's Day the same way. The only difference is that only women give gifts.


March 14th: White Day

White Day is when the women receive gifts. Some follow the custom that the man should give something that is approximately three times the worth of what he received on Valentine's Day. Gifts such as flowers, chocolates, and sweets are given in color white.


April 14th: Black Day

This holiday is for single people. For them, it's kinda sad that singles have to eat a sticky, black bean paste noodle dish called Jjajangmyeon as they wish they have a could have a special someone in their lives. Black day is also a day for mild mourning. Others have turned this "sad" day into a fun holiday of independence and freedom, getting together with other singles for jjajangmyeon-filled celebration.


May 14th: Yellow Day/Rose Day

Couples dress in yellow and give each other roses on Yellow Day. Singles are given the chance to bring spice into their love life by filling up on yellow curry.


June 14th: Kiss Day

Kiss Day is, well, for kissing. This is a great day to confess your long-kept feelings to your crush and to start a new relationship sealed with a kiss. A lot of makeup brands and also mint manufacturers take advantage of this time to promote their products.


July 14th: Silver Day

Future plans of marriage and sweet promises are bound by silver rings that couples exchange during this day. These gifts are given before or after in-person introduction to each other's parents.


August 14th: Green Day

This day is for drinking soju. Soju is an alcohol made from rice which has a very similar taste to vodka. Usually, couples take a romantic walk in the woods after downing soju. This holiday got its name from the green bottle in which soju comes in.


September 14th: Photo Day/Music Day

Koreans love taking photos and listening to music and September 14th is the day to celebrate that love. Portrait studios and photo booths are very popular. Noraebangs (karaoke rooms) are popular, too. This is the perfect day to take a selfie and singing your heart out.


October 14th: Wine Day

Couples drink a glass or bottle of wine over a romantic dinner to celebrate their love. Singles get drunk.


November 14th: Movie Day

Movie theater and DVD Bangs (a small movie room that could accommodate a small group of people) are never empty during this day. Another popular custom that they follow is that couples should give each other DVD gifts.


December 14th: Hug Day

Hug Day is the day we hug our loved ones, wrapping all that's happened for the whole year in warm, tight, hug. Couples spend the day hugging each other. Singles participate in polls in which Korean celebrity is the most huggable and cuddle-worthy.

The 14th day of the month is not enough to celebrate all the good things in our lives so let's celebrate everyday by living our life to the fullest.
