[Korean Wave] The Traditional Korean Seaweed Soup

Are you familiar with the Korean tradition of eating seaweed soup on their birthday? Do you know the reason behind it?

Miyeok guk is a Korean term for seaweed soup. It comprises of two words: miyeok which means edible seaweed and guk which is soup. Containing a high content of calcium and iodine, this is usually eaten by women after giving birth or during pregnancy.

In this regard, it is noted that the mother has eaten this food first before transferring its nutrients to her child through breastfeeding. Consuming seaweed soup on one's birthday is a form of tribute to the mother and child bonding and is believed to bring good fortune throughout the year.

If you're interested on making your own birthday soup, here is what you should do.

Ingredients:
    - 1 oz Dried seaweed (Miyeok or Brown seaweed)
    - 1 tbsp. Sesame oil
    - 8 cups Water
    - 3 cups Beef stock
    - 2 tbsps. Soy sauce (Gookganjang)
    - 1 tbsp. Minced garlic
    - 1 tsp. Salt

Instructions:

   1. Soak the dried seaweeds in cold water for 30 minutes.

   2. Rinse the seaweeds twice and carefully squeeze out excess water. Cut them into your preferred length.

   3. Heat a pot on a medium fire and sauté the seaweeds in sesame oil.

   4. Add the soy sauce and the garlic and mix for a couple of minutes before pouring the beef stock.

   5. Let it boil and cook until the soup looks milky.
