[Korean Wave] Common Korean Superstitious Beliefs

Korea is known for its rich culture. It started hundreds of years ago and has withstood a lot of innovations and changes. Their traditions and beliefs are being passed on through generations and are still intact today.

Old superstitions are still ingrained in their minds and are applied in their daily lives. As they say, luck is something you have to chase while you have to run fast from misfortunes. Anyway, obeying these beliefs wouldn't hurt, would they?

The following are some Korean superstitions which you may find either strange or interesting. Well, to each his own. Enjoy reading!

■  Deoksugung Path.
The Seoul Family Court used to be situated at the end of the street in this downtown palace and couples who wanted divorce had to go there to end their marriage. That's why it is believed, that couples who walk together in this area are doomed to break up.

Red Ink.
Koreans write the name of their dead with a red ink. Using it for living people connotes that you want that person to die.

Number Four.
The Chinese word for 'death' is pronounced the same way as the Korean word for number four. This is the reason why you won't find a fourth floor inside Korean buildings.

Pig Dreams.
When you dream of a pig or anything related to it, you would gain good fortune.

Cutting Nails at Night.
If you do so, a mouse will come out, eat the trimmings and transform into your double.

Before Exam Rituals.
Don't take a bath and avoid slimy food like seaweeds before taking up an exam. Your knowledge will slip away from your brain if you do these. Instead, you must eat glutinous rice cakes so the lessons will stick to your mind.

Whistling at Night.
This will summon ghosts and evil spirits.

Giving Shoes as a Gift.
You're not supposed to gift somebody with a pair of shoes. He or she may run away from you.

Moles Near the Mouth.
Females who have beauty marks near their mouth are believed to be unfaithful.

Chicken Wings.
Don't feed your husband chicken wings because he might fly away from you.

Fan Death.
Using an electric fan inside a closed room overnight may lead to your death.
